About the Intracept® Procedure
The Intracept® Procedure, developed by Relievant and now part of Boston Scientific, is a groundbreaking treatment option for patients suffering from chronic vertebrogenic low back pain.
This unique procedure targets the basivertebral nerve (BVN), which transmits pain signals from damaged vertebral endplates. Using a minimally invasive approach, Dr. Hemani guides a specialized probe into the vertebra under fluoroscopic guidance.
Radiofrequency energy is then used to gently ablate (deactivate) the basivertebral nerve. This stops the nerve from carrying chronic pain signals to the brain— without changing the structure of the spine or requiring any implants.
Understanding Vertebrogenic Low Back Pain
Vertebrogenic low back pain originates from the vertebral endplates—the cartilage and bone interfaces between the vertebrae and the discs.
The Source of Pain
When vertebral endplates become damaged or inflamed, they send pain signals through the basivertebral nerve to the brain, causing chronic pain that can significantly impact your daily life.
This type of pain is often triggered or worsened by common activities and movements. Understanding how vertebrogenic pain affects your daily activities is the first step toward finding effective treatment.

How the Intracept® Procedure Works
The Intracept® Procedure interrupts the pain pathway at its source. By targeting and deactivating the basivertebral nerve, the procedure stops pain signals from reaching your brain, providing long-lasting relief that allows you to return to the activities you love.
Who Can Benefit
You may be a candidate for the Intracept® Procedure if you have:
- Chronic low back pain for at least six months
- Tried conservative care for at least six months
- MRI showing features consistent with Modic changes – indicating damage at the vertebral endplates has led to inflammation
The Intracept Procedure, as with any procedure, has risks that should be discussed between the patient and medical provider. Dr. Hemani will conduct a thorough evaluation to determine if the Intracept® Procedure is appropriate for your specific condition.
